Happy Birthday:R. I. P. Gilbert.
I don’t talk about this often but maybe today I should. I never imagined life without my brother, Gilbert. It’s so weird that he’s forever frozen in my memory as being 18 years old. He would have been 20 today. 20 years old.. an age that I took for granted. I was in college at that age, starting my career… investing in my future. It won’t happen for Gilbert.
It’s sort of weird, instead of remembering him daily (when his death was more prominent in my mind) my sadness occurs when I speak of him or when I have a memory. I hate this part of mourning (which part is there to like really). Like today, August 1st – I remember his birth. I was there to see him born.
I still remember his voice – how he would say my name to catch my attention, how he sounded when he was frustrated… I wish it was recorded to share. I just still can’t fathom his death.
I still haven’t got many photos of him up because it seems surreal. Looking at his image makes my heart feel heavy and I am always close to tears thinking about his name. I do feel like an incredible part of my life has been removed. Some sort of history lost, someone that I can’t talk to when I want to…
He wasn’t Michael Jackson but I assume death creates some sort of absence that’s felt similarly among humans so it’s relatable. He wasn’t sick when he died, his life was taken.
Death is an event none of us can escape – rich or poor, tall or short, beautiful or not – death is inevitable.
I do wonder who my brother was reincarnated as…
My Odopod Sketch
Posted by Jerlyn in Inspiration on July 30, 2009
My Odopod Sketch. I took a few minutes to test this out at Odopod. View it here… if you have time to sit through the drawing…
It’s built in flash, it looks like… The company who hosts it is a digital agency. They are located in California. I might try this late to play around with more sketching…
Some people did some really cool work, so check out the features on sketch.odopod.com.
Samuel Fusso | Photographer
Posted by Jerlyn in Inspiration, Photography on July 29, 2009
I came across this article about Samuel Fosso today and thought this is a great idea! He photographs himself in different outfits and disguises.. This is definitely something that I would like to try one day since my DSLR is collecting dust currently since my move.
Samuel Fosso is one of the most renowned and prodigious young African photographers. His fantastical portraits of different types of people – from African Chiefs to American women – are revealed, upon closer inspection, to be self-portraits. A witty and ironic exploration of self-identity, Fosso’s work has been shown in major global venues such as the Photographers’ Gallery in London and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Here’s some of Samuel Fosso’s work:

Some people shouldn’t have kids

I’m writing this based on an article that I saw on CNN and a discussion I had with someone online.
A mother decapitated her baby [source]
SAN ANTONIO — A 33-year-old woman decapitated her newborn son and then tried to kill herself with a kitchen knife, police said Sunday.According to a police report, when officers arrived at a home at 351 Wayside Drive at 4:41 a.m. Sunday, they found the mother, Otty Sanchez, sitting on a couch screaming, “I killed my baby! I want to die!”Officers then found Sanchez’s newborn son, Scott Wesley Buchholtz Sanchez, lying on a bed in a back bedroom.”The baby had been decapitated,” said police spokesman Officer Joe Rios. Sanchez told officers that the devil made her kill her child, the report stated. [read more]
Ok, I was actually rendered speechless when I saw this. However, I would have to say how can this happen? I have no children so I can’t relate with mothers… so I’d love to understand…
How does one carry a baby for 9 months and in the end kill it?
Why are these people having sex let alone having children?
Is it possible for screening mothers who are pregnant for mental illness?
While discussing with my friend (she has two sons) online, she mentioned post traumatic distress. I looked up info on Postpartum Depression. A website I found mentioned “Mothers may experience many normal emotions. Some might be excitement and bewildered, joy and worry, uncertainty and confident.” So I think it’s possible that might be it but how can that turn into MURDER?
The woman from the article said that she said that the devil made her do it.
Also, she wasn’t even able to kill herself!
I read some comments on the article and I do agree, she needs to be placed on death row. What do you think?
Rebranding with the Butterfly…
Posted by Jerlyn in My Life in NYC on July 25, 2009
My butterflies went into more metamorphosis … since Jadersworld is making 9 years old. I am rebranding stationary & business cards so it’s taking me awhile especially with my work load…
The butterfly was chosen because I love butterflies but it was also the most beautiful critter. I realized I could use some of my favorite colors on there. It is a symbol of freedom and creativity. It’s delicate and small but makes such an incredible impact which represents me, a singular entity making the vast web beautiful. The butterfly’s metamophosis is an analogy for Jadersworld that transforms. It’s cross-cultured as well just like the owner. I did some research and read: “A butterfly represents a need for change and greater freedom, and at the same time it represents courage: one requires courage to carry out the changes necessary in the process of growth.” [source]
6 Artists You should BookMark!
I checked out some really great artists for some inspiration over the weekend. Hopefully you will find some in them as well. They are in no particular order. They have different styles and they all had elements that I appreciate. I wrote some of the reasons why I liked them and some blurbs about the artists.
1.
I love the vibrant colors in this piece. This artist’s illustrations are comprised of very organic shapes. I love the characters and line strokes in many of the pieces. Coming from Paris France.
2.
Her details are impeccable! She’s a definite must see and you should bookmark. She has a masters of arts from the Academy of arts Arnhem. She used to be a fashion designer but she moved on. Check her myspace page here and how fun it is that she lives in Amsterdam
.

This reminded me of my foundations class where we had to create expression drawings. Claire Scully graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2006 (MA in Communication Design) & in 2004 from London College of Communication (BA honours in Graphic and Media design/Illustration). She also has a store and blog that you need to check out.
4.

Kike Besada is an Art Director and has worked for brands such as Diesel, Nokia, Absolut, Mercedes, etc. I love the visual representation in his work.
5.
Ronlew Horn (name derived from Aaron Lewis Scamihorn) – he works at Media Sauce and has some incredible pieces in his illustration blog section.
6.
“A. Andrew Gonzalez, of San Antonio, Texas, is an award-winning figurative artist whose work has been exhibited in several countries.” I love the motion in some of his work his sketches are just as amazing.
I hope you like these artists, if you know of any others that I can gather inspiration from this weekend, please let me know

Car alarm has been going for over 12 hours
Posted by Jerlyn in My Life in NYC on July 19, 2009
I’m up late mostly because of the car alarm going off outside of my window. It was on since 3PM yesterday. I am writing this at 4am. I called the precinct and nothing was done.
There are great things about Brooklyn that I will write about or video blog about (thanks for the idea Johanna).
Yesterday, I went to FINALLY return my modem because we have shared internet at my apartment business (cool landlord). It was an adventure to get to the Optimum online office in Carnarsie. The temperature was in the high 80s and I was jogging up the stairs of the stop at Broadway Junction. I hate the humidity in the summer, I felt so sticky. I took 4 showers today.
I’m quickly writing this post because I’m up. Of all things, I sorted a makeup and jewelry box and watched a movie (that’s why I’m up). Earlier I went to a Malaysian restaurant in Little Italy (I know, random right?). I forgot what the place was called by it was at Mott St & Grand St. We had 3 types of dishes (which were incredible – I didn’t take photos – I know I am getting bad at documenting these things). After that, we had some incredible Gelato at the side of the street and went to firefly for beer.
Today (it’s already 4AM) I was thinking about going to church (OMG crazy ain’t it? I haven’t been to a church since my brother’s funeral and prior to that I don’t even remember), if I wake up early enough, I supposed I can make some coffee and head out there. I was supposed to go to Six Flags but plans don’t usually occur as I hope. I’ve been reading this book “48 Laws of Power” – it’s rather incredible. I’ve been reading that book for months now (I know I am usually quicker!)… I have been actually absorbing the historical stories. I love History.
On Friday (I took the day off) night I went along with my coworkers for sake (at Decibel 240E 9th st), it was very fun. We went to a hookah bar after (right next door), then a Ukrainian bar. I am actually the youngest in the group and was told I should take 10 years off and come back when I am in my 30s to actually “work for a living.” *Sigh* if only I didn’t have loans. However, they are right. I have much more traveling to do. I hate disclosing my age sometimes. I’m in that phase where I am having fun however, just more restricted fun. My life is so SATC now however.
I might explain later.. anyway I need a nap! Ear plugs included, hopefully the alarm will be off when I wake.
Don’t think I forgot about this blog Design Lady NYC.
Social Networks + Painting
Posted by Jerlyn in My Life in NYC on July 15, 2009
Isn’t it amazing how social networks make the world seem so small? I think it is. Just a few years ago the internet was much too expensive and webcams were probably unheard of. I forgot where I got my first one but the resolutions were less than today’s camera phones.
I also had a geocities account back in the day (sadly geocities is closing down so I had to backup everything). However, today people expect you to have your own domain. Even if I had jadersworld since I was 15, people were shocked back then since I had a domain. They didn’t know how it worked. How could they get their name as a dotcom.
Anyway that was the simple thought for today.
In Jerlyn business news: I have some paintings to sell and I will be listing them with different posts.
Here’s the first it has two styles that I loved. Based on Jordin Isip and Frida Kahlo. Guess which parts…
This is a merge of style in mixed media. It was painted by me and it’s 15×20 inches. It’s currently listed for $950.00. If you’re interested, let me know. The prints are $90.00 original sized (20×15) framed. $50.00 for the 8 x 10 and $40 for the 5 x 7 print.
I will be painting more happier paintings since this one seems a little dreary.
