Avoid loading content in the first frame

This is one of the problems I answered on cookbooks.adobe.com please check it out and submit questions.

How do I get Embed to not load content in the first frame of my Flash CS4 document?

Problem

When using the Embed tag, [Embed(source="stuff.swf", symbol="a_mc")], it loads all embedded content in the first frame, even before my stage color loads. This renders my pre-loader useless. I make casual games and many game sites want all assets in one swf file, so I can’t use a separate swf as a pre-loader. I have gone into Publish settings and set “Export classes in frame” to 3 and that didn’t prevent all the content from loading in the first frame.

Solution

Create a listener to make sure that the movie has loaded, this is in AS2 (assumption because the question called for “a_mc” in the request). In AS3, this can be solved by creating your preloader then calling a function that adds the movie to the stage.

Check the answer here.

22 secs of me on Ice

- Hey, I can blade but ice skating wasn’t made for tropical people :-D . I had fun, this was my 4th time on the ice (and I only fell twice out of those 4 times I’ve been on so I’m kind of proud)! It was quite a workout.

I have no excuse for not writing a post however here are a few updates:

I wrote two tutorials for cookbooks.adobe.com this past weekend (I’m now one of their Top Chefs /Editor/Moderator ). Thanks to Russ Ferguson for nagging me to write something and Ed Sullivan for choosing me. Here’s my profile on Adobe.com

Don’t you love Flash? :-)

Wednesday at AdobeMax

10519_603141342995_24400599_35110859_6145062_nThis photo is actually a lot more updated than Wednesday. I hardly got to take photos because my poor camera fell and died. Yes, on Tuesday.

I owned a Canon PowerShot SD770IS 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black) but this week I upgraded to a Canon PowerShot SD780IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD (Deep Red) (I like Red).

Anyway the last day of MAX, I thought nothing could make this day any better. I won a free book on Monday so I finally redeemed it for something I wanted from the O’Reilly book stand.

I got: Adobe InDesign CS4 One-on-One since I don’t get the chance to learn InDesign at my current job.

Wednesday was also the day that I won CS4 Master Collection TWICE! Adobe was testing their Adobe Wave program where they give you a word and you go to their booth and say the word :-D .

The first time I was 2 of 2. The 2nd drawing I came in first and won it on behalf of my friend, Shweta. She was not getting my texts!

The day closed well with my other co-worker winning also. So, basically 3 of us went back home with CS4 Master Creative Suite… What does that mean? Upgrades will be cheaper (Thank God!).

So Sessions – It was a very chilled day since people who came for the preConferences were all leaving. Some people even caught it abit close by leaving right after their sessions.

I checked out: How to Create Vector Portraits with Illustrator which was ok. I didn’t like it because I didn’t learn anything new and I created a tutorial on how to do Vectors similar to this so I was sort of disappointed. However, the guy was talented. He’s from Heavenspot Digital Creative Agency (The website is amazing by the way! Although the preloader looks abit out there – I’m such a critique)  Here’s some of his work that I loved:

Vector

Vector

I felt like a snob when I tweeted about not feeling the session but I was just disappointed.. because my vector looked like this when I left highschool:

vecIt did make me feel like vectoring again however, so yes inspiration was gotten. Gotta love Flash Backs! I just wanted to learn more tips!

Next Session: Flash Catalyst 101 Hands-on Lab was not great either. I mean it was a great class and the instructor was nice and patient. This loathe was based on equipment, it wasn’t announced beforehand that we needed to uninstall the old Catalyst and install the new one in order to make the labs work well. So if you are going to use the Catalyst Beta, please uninstall the previous version if you had the older one – hence why this is called beta right! So since my laptop took forever to uninstall, I took the lab and went to the Community Lounge, which is when I won the first CS4 things :-D so that made up for my unbalanced morning.

My other sessions were GREAT!

I had Css Tips and Tricks for Web Design with Stephanie Sullivan (@stefsull)! AMAZING! We learned “how to achieve design greatness while preserving industry standards.” She also showed tips and tricks that works for her, and her website is w3conversions.

My next one was by Tom Krcha – Social Media Experiences with Flash Media and RTMFP. RTMFP means Real Time Media Flow Protocol. This class was to learn how you can employ them in your online enterprise. View Session Here.

The very last session was InsideRIA’s Secrets of the Best Rich Internet Apps of 2009 (So Far). I began seeing tweets of people leaving adobemax via twitter and I was busy tweeting to my friends (shweta & russ) about CS4 that Russ won. I was basically on cloud 9 during this session. However I didn’t miss the Best RIA which were: Aviary, Balsamiq Mockups & Digital Tutors. I definitely will try out Balsamiq Mockups but I am very familiar with Aviary. They have a very cool program called Myna which they just announced. It’s a sound editor.

Check it out at Aviary.

Here’s Balsamiq.

Right after this session, I met up with Russ, Shweta, Rachel, her co-worker and Mark we ended the night with a few drinks, chatting and food :-) Good times!

See you guys next year!

Day 2 in L. A., Monday Session at AdobeMax

Having this 3 days in a row = not so good but it’s free hotel breakfast but this is what we had every day.
Breakfast

DAY 1 – Conference Day…

It’s only the first day and I’m seeing the most amazingly innovative things!

The design of the conference (by the way) was put together by a company I’m familiar with and Rachel works for: AKQA.

Congratulations guys! It looked amazing! Red Interactive (you know how amazing their work is!) was also involved.

We ventured out to the first General Session.

They said to use the crosswalk but Shweta ignores…

Shweta Crossing

Before entering the building, we had to go through some sort of CUSTOMS like airport security. I saw a girl with a cool hat, I asked to take her photo.

Girl with HatThen while seated, we took in everything…

First off, I finally got to see who makes ADOBE what it is. I met some great guys from @deMonsters. Their business cards are so creative! Erik van de Wiel, Ferdi Koomen & Paul Reijnierse deMonsters…

I placed their stickers on my laptop and they posted it on their blog :-) . Here’s the pic [link to their post]

The general session actually opened up with youths who work with Adobe + Black Eyed Peas.

They did a singing/choreographed session with some design which was pretty cool! Followed by Shantanu Narayen, President & CEO of Adobe.

10

Followed by Kevin Lynch, Chief Technology Officer.

11
12
It was also announced that the founders of Adobe was appointed the 2009 National Medal of Technology & Innovation by President Barack Obama.

So many amazing things were announced, such as where Flash is going… especially in Flash 10.1 I got some stats of how long the phone lasts with motion:
Active State of Video lasts 3.4 hours
Active State of Animation lasts 6.5 hours
Low power with animations lasts 14.5 hours…

Flash 10.1

Isn’t that amazing?

Here are some more videos:

I posted some more on my facebook page.

Another:

Then all of a sudden, there was a spoof of mythbusters with Adobe MythHackers…staring Kevin Lynch and Johnny Loiacono.

Adobe went into some more details about Omniture but sadly the speaker wasn’t very entertaining and people started tweeting negatively. I felt terrible for not being interested either :( . HOWEVER, the merge of Adobe + Omniture = AMAZING. Having tracking in one software/company/provider makes our lives as online advertisers easier I think.

We got sneaked peak never before seen clips of AVATAR which were superb!! I will be watching this the night it comes out! What’s so great about this movie: It’s in 3D (they gave us 3D glasses), It uses all Adobe software, & it appears to have a great storyline… I love Sci-fi though, so I might be bias.

After this session.. I went to Student Work and Curricular Design at RIT. As some of you know, I attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and I am extremely elated when I see the amazingly innovative things that come from that school… They started a new major there for Interactive Games and Media (Why wasn’t this there when I attended! I’d so do that!)

Prof. PhelpsThis is Andrew Phelps explaining about some of the Academic/Industry Partnership with their program.

Partnership

Partnership

This session was mostly to show how Adobe products were used and the students worked in teams to discover new technologies.  Interactive Games and Media Department at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The products used in here were Flex, Flash, Director, and Photoshop.

My next session was called Creative Suite 4 Evangelists’s Shootout.

They showed some really nifty tricks in inDesign, Bridge, etc. The speakers were: Paul Burnett, Rufus Deuchler & Jason  Levine. I was excited to finally meet Rufus since he followed me on twitter after I couldn’t find my Adobe Design Premium Package.

EvangelistsThe object of this session was to outdo each other. However, I loved all the tips that they presented.

—————–

My next session was From Big Screen to Browser, Desktop, and Mobile Device with Adobe Flash CS4.

The speakers were Jesse Resnick, Evan DeHaven & Jeff Lin.

They demoed entertainment brands that used Flash CS4. One of the companies, The Visionaire Group used this for Universal’s Fast & Furious 4 (HOT!). (The only thing I didn’t like about the Fast and Furious Campaign is that they had an entire campaign that tried to get to the male demographic but I wish they did something for women who were really into vin diesel’s hotness! Anyway…)

Another, Ignition Interactive explained how they used it for Disney/Pixar movie UP. Etc etc… everything was simply amazing. Here’s some eye candy:

Finally, I had Advanced AfterEffects Workflows for Flash Professional

It was interesting seeing how easy it was to integrate workflows from AfterEffects into Flash interchangeably. He showed how to turn keyframes into cuepoints to be used in Flash. I loved that this feature was demoed again because I had forgotten all about using it :-) I love After Effects.

Immediately after this session, we went off to mingle with others in the Community Lounge.

Community Lounge

I stayed and spoke to some people. I also met with my favorite Evangelist again, Rufus.

Jerlyn Thomas & Rufus D.

David Blaine also made an appearance.

David Blaine

Then I met up with Anissa | @anissat

We checked out some Max Awards, we really liked All Girls Arcade.

AnissaAnissa’s a very talented lady who introduced me to some other folks such as Stefanie Sullivan from (W3Conversions.com).

After mingling, I went off to meet others … called it a night somewhere after that!

First night in L. A. for Adobe Max Conference

So, I will definitely try my best to write this blog as thoroughly as possible so that you can experience what I have experienced.  As some of you know, I was in L. A. for the Adobe MAX conference.

First off, Adobe Max (make it a trending topic) is the best thing that has happened all year! Before I get into everything, I have to say getting here was a great experience also. I spent the night at Shweta’s and Tony’s in Astoria (I don’t even want to explain the trip en route but I had really delicious curry when I got there! Thanks Shweta (@digli)!)

Shweta and I finished up our shirts. I wore, “I’m function() looking for an EventListener” and she wore, “I’m EventListener, looking for a function().”

Have any of you flew on Virgin America? I love their multitouch screens at the back of the seats. I originally got this flight because it had wifi (which they failed to say you’d have to pay for – so i didn’t get it. I figured I could go 6 hours without having to use the internet (I know – kinda scary)).

Everything cost money, so being the thoughtful women that we are, we got ourselves some grub before boarding. Then we ordered only free stuff (you know, coffee, soda, water)… I don’t feel bad now that I am flying back on jetBlue.

So on during our 6 hour flight, I coded Shweta’s website in html, css & jQuery (AJAX), Check it out. I finished it in about 3-4 hours :-) ! It was fun though, I thought of it as a challenge.

So, This is how MAX BEGINS:

We got there around 1 PM and my friend Julian (that I hadn’t seen in forever, thinks it’s a great idea to take me to have a DOUBLE DOUBLE at In-N-Out Burger and Animal Fries (most calorific thing I have eaten all year maybe).

The first thing I did was register of course. So I got a fancy waterbottle and lanyard. The lanyard opened into a 4GB USB drive! Talk about creative!

IdentificationSomething makes me uneasy about this tag, let’s leave it at that. :(

Following that, I went to check in and met up with bad-ass radiesel. Then I went to a social mixer where I ran into none other than one of my professors from college (Adam Smith!). Always great to see people from RIT! I’m so proud of them!

My sister and her friend also visited me ;-) .

I also hung out with some other cool folks/evangelists/developers/attendees/speakers etc.

Shweta OkeThis is Justin Mclean (from classsoftware) & Shweta. Justin’s from Australia. He actually had a session on the last day of MAX.

Everyone seemed so approachable!

After the digital mixer, a few of us went to iHop then retired for the night.
