Antony Gormley

I never really paid too much attention to the sculptures around broadway before and came across them again yesterday.
I actually did ignore them until I overheard someone said, “Wow look at the people on the roofs!” I looked up and replied, “they are sculptures.” The guy thought there were “jumpers,” he apparently was a tourist.

I counted 5 of them on my way to the Museum of Sex. There were done by 59-year-old Anthony Gormbley.
When I uploaded them to facebook yesterday, Kim Easley brought it to my attention that there are a great deal of them around Manhattan.
I did some research when she told me the artist’s name and I came across a map from the NY Times. They also mentioned, “the New York City Police Department pre-emptively reassured the public that the figures were not potential jumpers on the verge of committing suicide.”
I want to take a walk and take photos of them all. I really like them. He did some of them in London as well. This one in NYC was called “Event Horizon.”
Inspiration: Heidi Johnson

This weekend, I met with a fine artist: Heidi Johnson. I came up to this exhibit by chance while visiting the Bronx in NYC.

I was very interested in this piece that she is standing next to because 1. I’m in love with color 2. I love butterflies.
Heidi is a beautiful person inside and out. I was also able to get her to tell me about her personal life and see how it affected her artwork.

- For these photographs I used my Canon Powershot SD780IS and used Phoenix on Aviary.com to create the vignette effect.

I got up at 6 am. I was in the office by the time I usually get up. I also had no coffee (haven’t had coffee for 2 weeks).
Our volunteer day took place at the visions vacation camp for the blind. They are actually hiring for the summer so if you’d like to apply you can download forms for employment on their site.
We painted the mural today. Yesterday Rigel and I did the preliminary sketch and today our amazing team colored the illustration.

It was an amazing team effort!

I had a lot of fun!
High Contrast Mural Drawing
Posted by Jerlyn in Illustrations on June 3, 2009
This is what I am sketching out today for volunteer day tomorrow. It’s for a vision impaired camp that’s why the colors are in high contrast. I haven’t used illustrator in awhile so this was a change in my norm: coding or designing.
The team is painting it tomorrow. The cab leaves in a few minutes, it’s currently 9 AM. I’m excited about this field trip! A fellow co-worker, Rigel, will also be helping
. This should be fun!
I will document it by taking photos with my digital camera

Huichol Art

I had an amazing time in Mexico and a few of my posts may be about it so bear with me…
I wanted to talk about Huichol art, some information was gathered from Wikipedia of course.
Firstly, Huichol are “an indigenous ethnic group of western central Mexico.” Their art and religion are quite fascinating and thus depicted in their craft of beading, etc. I usually don’t purchase religious art work however, I couldnt help but find the culture and history simply beautiful.
“Like many indigenous American groups, Huichols have traditionally used the peyote cactus in religious rituals. Huichol practices seem to reflect pre-Columbian practices particularly accurately. These rituals involve singing, weeping, and contact with ancestor spirits.“
While in Mexico, I purchased many beaded necklaces, bracelets and an image (created with thread on wax) made by some Huichol vendors.

Necklace that matched my dress
I just happened to have a dress to match.

I bought a necklace like what she's wearing...

Close-up of necklace...
I have a part 2 to this post, I need to take photos of everything I bought. I realized that this amazing artwork is basically a few pesos each… Can you imagine? 50 Pesos? $3 basically…
Some yarn art that I found online:

Huichol yarn art
I will post the one that I purchased later… They use a great deal of religious stories in their work as you can see… i. e. the sun and moon.
