Highlighting the fabulous: @gardenia

For a few posts I am going to highlight people who have influenced change in my life. I won’t call them role models however because I have this belief that idolizing humans when they are susceptible to failure isn’t fair. Thus, I will never set myself up for disappointment. Also, these people will feel better about making mistakes if they have to, since we are all not perfect. I think it’s a wonderful thing to let people know how they affected your life positively.

With that said, I will start with Gardenia (I’m writing about you!). Well, I worked with Gardenia at Publicis Modem and didn’t know her personally. My earliest memory of her was actually her dog, Biscuit (Biscuit must be one of the most loved dogs in the world he also has his own twitter account @no1cuter). I turned around one day in the office at Publicis and there was a dog running around. He was incredibly small and right away I wondered if it was normal for Americans to carry their dogs to work (aren’t some people allergic?). Biscuit is actually a Pomeranian which are hypoallergenic (that I found out later).

I didn’t get to work directly with her at Publicis but when she left, I worked with her when she reached out to me to be a designer on Riocaliente.com, a spa that she was interested in acquiring. I was very fortunate to have been able to. I was fortunate enough to visit Mexico where I had an incredible time according to this post (where I got a Spanish translator for the iPod) and this post (where I purchased Huichol Art).

This is the website:

While working on that site, I learned a great deal about Gardenia that set alot of my life in perspective and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect. Especially because I met her, I had the best vacation ever!

Have you ever done this before? Where you’re happy to have known certain things about someone. I found out that we had a great deal in common and she had actually studied design, is well-read and travelled many places. She seems to be confident in a great deal of things and is quite lovely. All the while she is enjoying life and starring on her own reality show.

She is also a vegetarian, a lifestyle that I just adapted (I will write an entry about this soon). So I definitely follow her blog about the types of produce that she gets and food she cooks.

Follow her on @gardenia

Huichol Art

I had an amazing time in Mexico and a few of my posts may be about it so bear with me…
I wanted to talk about Huichol art, some information was gathered from Wikipedia of course.

Firstly, Huichol are “an indigenous ethnic group of western central Mexico.” Their art and religion are quite fascinating and thus depicted in their craft of beading, etc. I usually don’t purchase religious art work however, I couldnt help but find the culture and history simply beautiful.

Like many indigenous American groups, Huichols have traditionally used the peyote cactus in religious rituals. Huichol practices seem to reflect pre-Columbian practices particularly accurately. These rituals involve singing, weeping, and contact with ancestor spirits.

While in Mexico, I purchased many beaded necklaces, bracelets and an image (created with thread on wax) made by some Huichol vendors.

I have a part 2 to this post, I need to take photos of everything I bought. I realized that this amazing artwork is basically a few pesos each… Can you imagine? 50 Pesos? $3 basically…

Some yarn art that I found online:

I will post the one that I purchased later… They  use a great deal of religious stories in their work as you can see… i. e. the sun and moon.

Mexico update post

ipod

According to the previous post, I am in Mexico. About 45 minutes from Guadalajara. I am having a great time.

Well, I am at a spa and have no reason not to have a good time, however – in venturing out of the grounds, I had an app on my iPod that I truly believe needed to be “endorsed” or plugged.

Before leaving NYC. I decided to purchase an app for $9.99. I thought that would be better than carrying around a pocket dictionary (which I did not have by the way – I have maybe 15 French books and 1 Spanish reference book).

Anyway, the app is called: Spanish Anywhere. Language by Alexandra F. Falek. This was $10 well spent. It has over 9000 words. 1750 useful phrases, 5000 reference words. There’s also a conjugation section which is really good. Even my new Mexican Comparades think it was great! When I wrote words to figure out what I needed to say, they also typed words in Spanish to speak to me. We had conversations all night at a fiesta(with tequila hahah).

It’s my first time going to Mexico. I have a travbuddy profile so I added it and decided to post the widget. I doubt that I will have any internet so… Here’s a post to look at for awhile, but check back of course!

I wanted to write about more design related things but you will just have to wait until I come back. In the meantime, check out all these great design links:
