Unleashing inner creativity

Where do I find artistic inspiration? (repost)

Have you ever wondered how many designers, illustrators, art directors, photographers and other creative people come up with amazing works of art? Most of these ideas come from inspirations that can come from a variety of sources such as: Food, Fashion, Nature, Other artists, Found Objects, Photography, etc.

For this post I will answer a few questions:
1. How do I get inspired?
2. What materials/devices do I use to record them?
3. How do I organize them?

1. How do I get inspired?

I believe art comes from many sources in life. One of the areas I draw largely from is my background (I’m from an island in the Caribbean) and culture. From my culture I focus on many things from the way people dress, the foods they eat, the colors that change their moods, how they interact with each other, the music and movies they like, etc. All of these things allow me to learn what appeals to them and helps me create things that communicate to them nonverbally.

Music and Food seem to be my two favorite sources of inspiration. I like music because it appeals to people’s moods. They can love, or hate it – the same with food. The challenge for me artistically is to play music that others can dance to, and when people get hungry, feed them so that they are content.

Hopefully this analogy was understood – in other words, I like to create things that make others excited and create a familiarity or happy medium. In music, the right set of beats, tones, or instruments make the listener enjoy the composition, when to others it might sound like noise. I love when songs appeal to me because it helps my thoughts flow better. With food, presentation is appealing but taste seals the deal. Nothing’s more rewarding than asking for seconds because the meal was delicious.

2. What devices/materials do I use to record them.

a. Sketch/Note Books

I’m never without a sketchbook – In fact, I have many. A few on my bookshelves, one on my desk, one in my bookbag and one on my nightstand.

I doodle everyday — during meetings, while on the phone, during commutes, and in the middle of the night if an idea wakes me.

b. Photos

Don’t you love cell phone cameras? They seem to make everything really convenient these days. Especially when you find something that’s inspiring.

I take at least one photo per day with my cellphone camera. These photos are then posted, emailed or digitally manipulated. I highly suggest practicing this, especially for references. Take photos of things that interest you: the majority of my photos are of food (naturally), patterns, colors that appear in repetition (I love red) and people.

I’m also armed with a digital point and shoot camera (for higher quality recordings) and a digital SLR that I take out once in awhile when I pretend to be a real photographer.

c. Video Camera

Fortunately, many point and shoot cameras and cell phone cameras are equipped with video cameras. This is the same idea as taking photos but I love footage because I can record better shadows, positions and depth. Photos can seem flat, and video helps you get around the subject.

d. Blogs

Writing also helps to develop your work. I enjoy this because I get feedback from the outside world. So feel free to let me know: What do you use to record your inspiration?

3. How do I organize them?

As a product of this technology wave, I use sites such as flickr, tumblr, picasa and facebook to organize my photos. I can create albums and organize them chronologically or prioritize them by ideas that I want to use in the near, or far, future. You may want to do so. If you already use these websites, how do you organize them?

My sketchbooks aren’t as organized as my photos; I scan sketches that I expect to recreate and upload them to private albums or prioritize them within folders of my external hard drive.

Tell me some ways that you get inspired!

Such a brand whore

It’s certainly not what you think, I don’t go for super priced items at stores or supermarkets but I realized that I am extremely influenced by brands. It’s usually from experiencing them and adapting to them. However, I ought to be ashamed of myself since I am fully aware of advertising. Heck, my day job is to get people to buy things (that they might not necessarily need).

Lately, I’ve been finding reasons why I need to purchase things. Recently, I determined that purchasing a Starbucks coffee might be better than preparing my own and it’s all because they got me with their marketing. Yes, they won. My last coffee grounds finished a week ago and I haven’t yet made a detour to the supermarket to purchase any. So, Starbucks influenced one of my peers awhile back and she recently showed me her gold card. Naturally, I wanted to switch from my regular card to get a spiffy, shiny card with my name on it. Yep, that’s how they did it. I am aware though that I need to use my card at least 30 times. This means 30 x $5 (approximately) equals $150 before I get a lustrous gold card.

Just 25 more times… if I keep forgetting breakfast.

However, the other thing I love about Starbucks is the experience itself. I can reload my card from my mobile phone or online.

I can check my past transactions. I can use their free wifi at any of their locations. I’m never stressed while waiting in line. They’ve most certainly won me over.

Anyway, a few weeks ago I came across an article on Bloomberg Businessweek and the products that I consume won when being compared to other brands. They called the issue The Popularity Issue (which I found online here). I am only covering the main ones listed that deals with my life directly and will do a follow up post if possible.

Here’s a run down:

Peanut Butter.

Of course Jif won. I love Jif. I don’t even like peanut butter that much but that’s my default brand. The store brand peanut butter doesn’t seem to compare. For the past 20 years Jif also seems to have been America’s favorite.

Booze: Smirnoff Vodka

Although I’m a Guinness type of gal, I don’t mind Smirnoff (Kids I’m not condoning your drinking at all). However, “Vodka is perceived as low-cholesterol, has no breath effects, is mixable, and is part of that whole Sex and the City, women-with-fancy-drinks phenomenon,” according to Thomas Russo.

Cereal: Honey Nut Cheerios.
But, I love Oatmeal.

Deodorant: Secret
Although I love using Dove.

Car Color: White
Although I would prefer Red, I don’t even have one :) (I live in NYC).

Sneaker: Nike Air Force 1
I have never used Air Force 1s but I like my Nike running shoes :) . I also like Zoo York. My favorite pairs of shoes are from Steve Madden.

Flower: Rose
I love roses and I love hibiscus flowers.

Lipstick: Revlon
I love  Opi.

The issue also covered face-offs.

Democrats won over Republicans, Budlight over Bud, Cats over Dogs, White over Whole wheat bread, Beatles over the Rolling Stones.

What are some of your favorite brands and which ones you would never substitute for another? Would you take a significant detour just to get that brand?

Variable Tee

Color TeeI was playing around with illustrator the other day and decided to come up with this concept: I’m variable. Currently this one says Variable. I am looking at different ways to get it printed but this current Women’s V neck Shirt is $23 each if you’re interested :-) . Oh why not, support the starving artist haha.

This was very refreshing to play with by the way :-) . I used the same idea on a digsby design for fun:

Day 2 in L. A., Monday Session at AdobeMax

Having this 3 days in a row = not so good but it’s free hotel breakfast but this is what we had every day.

DAY 1 – Conference Day…

It’s only the first day and I’m seeing the most amazingly innovative things!

The design of the conference (by the way) was put together by a company I’m familiar with and Rachel works for: AKQA.

Congratulations guys! It looked amazing! Red Interactive (you know how amazing their work is!) was also involved.

We ventured out to the first General Session.

They said to use the crosswalk but Shweta ignores…

Before entering the building, we had to go through some sort of CUSTOMS like airport security. I saw a girl with a cool hat, I asked to take her photo.

First off, I finally got to see who makes ADOBE what it is. I met some great guys from @deMonsters. Their business cards are so creative! Erik van de Wiel, Ferdi Koomen & Paul Reijnierse deMonsters…

I placed their stickers on my laptop and they posted it on their blog :-) . Here’s the pic [link to their post]

The general session actually opened up with youths who work with Adobe + Black Eyed Peas.

They did a singing/choreographed session with some design which was pretty cool! Followed by Shantanu Narayen, President & CEO of Adobe.

Followed by Kevin Lynch, Chief Technology Officer.

It was also announced that the founders of Adobe was appointed the 2009 National Medal of Technology & Innovation by President Barack Obama.

So many amazing things were announced, such as where Flash is going… especially in Flash 10.1 I got some stats of how long the phone lasts with motion:
Active State of Video lasts 3.4 hours
Active State of Animation lasts 6.5 hours
Low power with animations lasts 14.5 hours…

Flash 10.1

Isn’t that amazing?

Here are some more videos:

I posted some more on my facebook page.

Another:

Then all of a sudden, there was a spoof of mythbusters with Adobe MythHackers…staring Kevin Lynch and Johnny Loiacono.

Adobe went into some more details about Omniture but sadly the speaker wasn’t very entertaining and people started tweeting negatively. I felt terrible for not being interested either :( . HOWEVER, the merge of Adobe + Omniture = AMAZING. Having tracking in one software/company/provider makes our lives as online advertisers easier I think.

We got sneaked peak never before seen clips of AVATAR which were superb!! I will be watching this the night it comes out! What’s so great about this movie: It’s in 3D (they gave us 3D glasses), It uses all Adobe software, & it appears to have a great storyline… I love Sci-fi though, so I might be bias.

After this session.. I went to Student Work and Curricular Design at RIT. As some of you know, I attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and I am extremely elated when I see the amazingly innovative things that come from that school… They started a new major there for Interactive Games and Media (Why wasn’t this there when I attended! I’d so do that!)

Prof. PhelpsThis is Andrew Phelps explaining about some of the Academic/Industry Partnership with their program.

This session was mostly to show how Adobe products were used and the students worked in teams to discover new technologies.  Interactive Games and Media Department at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The products used in here were Flex, Flash, Director, and Photoshop.

My next session was called Creative Suite 4 Evangelists’s Shootout.

They showed some really nifty tricks in inDesign, Bridge, etc. The speakers were: Paul Burnett, Rufus Deuchler & Jason  Levine. I was excited to finally meet Rufus since he followed me on twitter after I couldn’t find my Adobe Design Premium Package.

EvangelistsThe object of this session was to outdo each other. However, I loved all the tips that they presented.

—————–

My next session was From Big Screen to Browser, Desktop, and Mobile Device with Adobe Flash CS4.

The speakers were Jesse Resnick, Evan DeHaven & Jeff Lin.

They demoed entertainment brands that used Flash CS4. One of the companies, The Visionaire Group used this for Universal’s Fast & Furious 4 (HOT!). (The only thing I didn’t like about the Fast and Furious Campaign is that they had an entire campaign that tried to get to the male demographic but I wish they did something for women who were really into vin diesel’s hotness! Anyway…)

Another, Ignition Interactive explained how they used it for Disney/Pixar movie UP. Etc etc… everything was simply amazing. Here’s some eye candy:

Finally, I had Advanced AfterEffects Workflows for Flash Professional

It was interesting seeing how easy it was to integrate workflows from AfterEffects into Flash interchangeably. He showed how to turn keyframes into cuepoints to be used in Flash. I loved that this feature was demoed again because I had forgotten all about using it :-) I love After Effects.

Immediately after this session, we went off to mingle with others in the Community Lounge.

Community Lounge

I stayed and spoke to some people. I also met with my favorite Evangelist again, Rufus.

Jerlyn Thomas & Rufus D.

David Blaine also made an appearance.

Then I met up with Anissa | @anissat

We checked out some Max Awards, we really liked All Girls Arcade.

AnissaAnissa’s a very talented lady who introduced me to some other folks such as Stefanie Sullivan from (W3Conversions.com).

After mingling, I went off to meet others … called it a night somewhere after that!

Cool websites 1: Inspiration

I love websites, I can actually look at them all day especially the well designed ones that keep me coming back or convince me that I need to change the look of my work because I am behind on a trend.

Here are a few that I’ve admired in the past days:

This is actually a campaign, although it tried to make it seem like it wasn’t. I think it’s similar to NY Girl of My Dreams. Which was created by a guy named Patrick who went to the same University that I attended.

Fun with changing backgrounds…

Well this was my inspirational fix for the day.

Off to Mexico

It’s my first time going to Mexico. I have a travbuddy profile so I added it and decided to post the widget. I doubt that I will have any internet so… Here’s a post to look at for awhile, but check back of course!

I wanted to write about more design related things but you will just have to wait until I come back. In the meantime, check out all these great design links:
