Microtropolis: It’s all about the apps

I didn’t proofread this! Just wrote on my iPad on the commute home on the subway:

I was speaking to @asciibn tonight at the microtropolis event in Chelsea. He was my plus one. I got an invite to the Windows 8 launch event via kloutperks and figured the person who would enjoy this the most and was a bigger geek than me would be him… Plus there was booze. I’m not particularly fond of open bars but anyway, that’s another topic.

I got there early because I work across the street from pier 57 and literally spent all day wondering what to expect. I haven’t opened my windows machine for over a year after I got my iMac and MacBook Air because I just don’t have the time (definitely not because I’m a Mac fan). I just have no time outside of work to work on anything else, I’m actually hugely against apple even if I own many devices. They are overpriced for what they do but majority is what is need to follow if I want an income. I’ve been called a hypocrite but I believe your work is based on the mastery of a tool — any tool.

Anyway, I walked into pier 57and saw the hanging signage. Loved it. At first look, I loved the vibrant colors chosen that reminded me of that last windows phone that wasn’t quite a phone… What’s it called? Um, oh yea a … Ugh, crap I had to google the name… A Lumia!

Lets say if you’re used to those phones, you’re not expecting anything new in Windows 8. However, at first glance of the OS after not seeing it in over a year… The windows UI looks very familiar… It reminds me of the @Litl. Wait, what’s a Litl? Well, it just so happens that I purchased one back in the day and it was mostly flash based so I was going to develop an app for it. Why does the stacking order of Windows very similar?

It’s really about the apps. Lets see, I turn on my android phone. I use it for: checking my text messages, checking in, probably instagramming, probably a Facebook message or two. I use my iPad for reading on the subway… I Instagram on it as well… definitely some Facebook.

Scrolling through the windows machine, I figured yea probably wouldn’t look so awesome if it wasn’t a touch screen. Not only that, how many people will be developing apps on that platform based on the users? There’s definitely a market but if you think about it, what device will I be carrying while using this platform? When will I be stationed and why would I find value in it?

I used various devices at different sizes which was refreshing. The company that curated this event was incredible. Especially  in the light of Apple introducing the new iPad mini, it’s nice that Windows seem to work seamlessly on each resolution and the company did a great job introducing different machines. They also found companies that would love their apps on the windows platform. I love variety. This means, I can buy a cheap acer machine and install Windows 8… But again, it’s better with touch and, why would I use this? I have an iPad. Not only that, the UI doesn’t intrigue me enough to have adobe suite on it, thus, being an unnecessary purchase.

In conclusion, Windows isn’t for me. It might be for you if you want something very simple. Right now, the apps displayed were quite limited. I’m certain that they don’t come pre-installed and the gestures used weren’t that advanced. There’s nothing unique. I’m unimpressed but might be a great Xmas gift, just like the Litl was, for a non-geek.

OAN: hope you enjoy some of the pics from the event! It was an amazing set!

The Outrageous Dessert Crawl

What do you get when you send a foreign foodie into NYC? Well, just a plethora of choices to make the foodie happy.

Last night’s event was a dessert crawl and I do have a sensory overload that might make my dentist cringe but my sugar high was been pretty steady.

I did indulge and if I can’t fit into my jeans I’m starting a strict diet.

This idea came from Revi. She invited me to the November Outrageous Dessert Crawl by The NYC Food Crawl on facebook.

We had a few rules before we started:
1. Pace ourselves
2. Follow the Route
3. Get to know others in the time we wait
4. Try suggestions or other things on the menu
5. Bring home souvenirs

You can see the photos from the rest of our night on Design Lady NYC’s album here

We started with a small group.

Revi and I met Gil and Melanie who are now our foursquare friends. Melanie’s an Architect and Gil used to be a paralegal. They are all almost as big foodies as I am and really nice people. They are both from California originally.

We made acquaintances and we were on our way!

1. Led Zeppole

The first place we went was Led Zeppole which I think is the group’s favorite.

It’s located on 328 east 14th street between 1st an 2nd Ave. We tried the killer fried Oreos like they suggested but we really enjoyed this delicious fried dough (Zeppoles) on their menu that drammaa had us try. Here’s his photo:

2. MomoFuku
The next stop was Momofuku (why do I feel this is a bad word?) and I splurged and got 4 types of truffle. The banana cake truffle was amazing to me. Momomfuku is located at 207 second ave at the corner of 13th street.

3. Just Sweet Desserts
The next stop was Just Sweet Desserts where we had tapioca with coconut dessert soup cold.

I loved it, especially the mushy balls (take it as you will).

It’s located at 83 Third Ave at the corner of 12th.

We also found out that if you put “waving cat” into Google (thanks to Gil), you come up with Maneki Neko which are the waving cats that you see in Japanese influence establishments. Maneki Neko “literally “Beckoning Cat”; also known as Welcoming Cat, Slappy Cat, Lucky Cat, Money cat, or Fortune Cat,” according to Wikipedia.

4. Saint Alp’s Teahouse
At Saint Alp’s Teahouse located at 39th Third Ave. We also saw other Maneki Nekos here.

We met a few other crawlers and had 6 types of toasts.

I swear that my breakfast toast are never going to be the same again! Our groups favorite was definitely the condensed milk classic toast.

5. Spot Dessert Bar
Spot Dessert Bar was where my sugar crash came and I think the group was weary also.

Behold (the manager joked it was at a 5 million dollar bid).

Spot is located at 13 St. Marks place between 2nd and 3rd ave.

We got the satay peanut creama with bacon toast.

It was interesting. I think I liked it the most in the group. However, I couldn’t have too much of it since my taste buds were fatigued.

Everything in moderation right?

10.10.10 NYC Comic Con

Revi convinced me into attending the NYC comic convention this Sunday – ok, so it didn’t take a great deal of convincing. I had a blast (with a capital B so, Blast!).

I want to attend next year! However by then I hope that I am partially done with my own novel.

The first thing we did was enter the Michael Jackson experience raffle to win a nintendo wii (I already own one). So I actually decided to preorder the video game on amazon.com instead. Let’s just say I will be practicing Michael’s lean until then (I will post the YouTube video).

Then we walked around some more. I bought 3 hardcover books which ended up being a special so I carried around 6 hardcover books. The highlight of all this were the artist signatures that we got.

She told me it took about a year and 1/2 to complete her novel. I can’t imagine what mine will be (determination right?).

However a few hours later, we were tired from the excess luggage in our hands.

I met a budding artist whose work I bought (6.50 for two books) she is on deviant art. Her name is Hanh Nguyen.

We also took tons of photos with other characters. (By the way I am wearing Robot Legs T-Shirt).

I checked in at the Rock Star Games booth and got a deck of playing cards.
A few more walking around and I purchased a marker set to get started on my novel (a little bit every day right?) since I need to do pre-digital sketching. I also picked up random free things on the way.

I also took a break and had some empanadas. I was famished.

Then I met Shawn Alleyne. An amazing artist! Hopefully he works with me. I want to create his website!

By the end, I was extremely exhausted, so we got Starbucks.

Check out Design Lady NYC on facebook to see the rest of the photos when I get the chance to upload.

Thanks Revi for the photos!

NYC Twestival 2010

If you’re visiting because you saw this from yesterday’s NYC twestival 2010, I say: Welcome and you can actually follow me @Jerlyn on twitter.com. This photo was posted on theblaqlist.com from last night’s event (Thanks guys).

I’m sorry that I couldn’t have met everyone but I had a great time and this was for a good cause so I’m thrilled that many of you had the same thoughts in mind when you came to Good Units or donated.

This is @pluckypea, @jerlyn and @arifuchs

Tell me of the next event and hope to see you there!

Night of the AdEaters

As some of you know, I went to Night of the AdEaters this past friday. It was the first one ever in NYC. Sponsored by companies such as the daily news, open skies, etc.

“On September 25, 2009, Night of the AdEaters® will debut in the birthplace of advertising — New York City. With a 27 year history, showing annually in countries all around the world and attracting hundreds of thousands, Night of the AdEaters® has been called one of the most highly-anticipated events of 2009 and will be the closing event for Advertising Week.” Adeatersnyc.com

It was done by Findr interactive and gravity. Let’s just say that it was very interesting. Initially I thought it was a great idea because it’s showing commercials from all over the world. It was also advertised as an all night thing. I thought it would be beneficial especially since my industry is advertising and I’d get inspired by things I have seen. It was also intriguing to see commercials from different countries. Many of the commercials were captivating and it was great seeing commercials even from the 1950s! Oh my, how much has advertising changed!

So, because of this, I decided to stay the entire night. There was a raffle by the 3rd round where I didn’t win of course… it was a business class trip for two to Paris, France.

This was the ad that drew me in:

My review:
The event was advertised for 7PM. At that time, the press was there to ask questions and such (great). However, the actually deal didn’t start until after 8:30 so by that time, I was essentially bored… To  make it worse, there were 3 sections so the first part was finished by 10PM, you can do the math for the rest and add intermission time. I got a free drink (from buying the ticket, however I had to feed myself (an extra $5))…

Hopefully next year it will be fast paced, maybe meals/snacks can be included… at least popcorn! Despite this, I saw some incredible ads! Here’s a few:

Fashion Illustrator, Yonghee Kim

Tonight I went with some friends to a Fashion Illustrator’s exhibit in K-Town. Her name is Yonghee Kim. I really loved these. The Collage was done very well also. Lovely watercolor… I don’t know much about fashion illsutration and I’m not one to analyze art but I think her pieces are underpriced. Here’s some of her beautiful art:

My Life in NYC

I’ve added a new category because it was needed. I haven’t been blogging in awhile. I guess I can catch up with this. My New Category is called “My Life in NYC,” after all this is DesignLadyNYC. You can still follow me on twitter @Jerlyn. However, there’s still a great deal of information that I will like to keep less restricted to the 140 characters.

These are the posts that will let you know the personal me.

I wanted to write about some life experiences such as: Yesterday’s commute home. I was stuck at 14th and 8th in Chelsea for a 1/2 hour because no trains were able to run. I overheard that someone got ran over by the train. However, I couldn’t find news of it this morning. The passerby wasn’t sure whether the person was a male or female. However, there were firefighters, paramedics, police officers and canines at the metro stop.

With this category related post, I also wanted to write about certain venting/events that I attend, or places that I visited. Something almost like when I travelled to Mexico but without the artwork/design that goes with it. I think I miss that from my last blog on jerlynthomas.com.

That way I can talk about the British lunch that I had today at: Tea and Symphany which was very delicious!

To be or …

So I am trying my best to write my blog but I am so caught up with work again. Work is going to be a crazy place until the end of the month.

I am enjoying the idea of having a super mysterious relationship. I just assure you all that he is good to me so just be happy for me. He did tell me that he is a nice guy so this shouldn’t be a shock to me.

I am currently on the train and the woman sitting next to me keeps looking at me. I think it’s because of my hair. I blow dried it this morning so it’s extra fluffy even if I tried straightening it abit. A guy just also sat next to me. He had been checking me out ever since he got into the train LOL. Well I am keeping my headphones in (in life talk this means Do Not Disturb). Talking about that – there’s a guy who keeps stalking me. I may have to start heading into work earlier because of this. He first met me at the laundry. He and his friend tried hitting on me and I made it apparent that I wasn’t interested. Yet every time he sees me he insists on walking next to me or getting me attention when I brush him off or speed up to get away. I give him a mean look because I have my iPod and I don’t want to chat yet he doesn’t get it. A few times I asked him to just leave me alone. Next time, I am going to just ask his name and talk to the cops about it.

I am also entertaining the idea of moving to a new state! Isn’t that exciting? I still have awhile so I have much to think about. I have no idea what I am going to do about “Design Lady NYC” if I do… mmm much to think about

Sent from my iPod Touch.
